The story of Tezze sul Brenta
History and origins
The earliest traces of settlement in the area date back to 1374, but it was only in 1805, by Napoleonic decree, that Tezze sul Brenta was established as an independent municipality. The name itself, derived from the dialect teze, meaning barns, tells of the area's agricultural nature from its origins, a territory marked by the constant presence of the Brenta river, which has shaped its economy and settlement over the centuries.
What to see
The church of Santa Lucia holds precious sixteenth-century frescoes now attributed to Jacopo Bassano, one of the greatest Venetian painters of the Renaissance, who was in fact from the Bassano area. Villa Dolfin, built in the seventeenth century and surrounded by a large park, is another testimony to the territory's noble past. The parish church of Saints Peter and Rocco, rebuilt in its current form between 1911 and 1912, preserves an altarpiece attributed to the da Ponte workshop and an eighteenth-century wooden crucifix, elements that testify to the municipality's long religious and artistic tradition.
Nature and surroundings
The municipal territory is crossed by the Parco Grave e Zone umide del Brenta, a protected natural area that safeguards the river environments and wetlands linked to the river's course, an important habitat for numerous species of birds and aquatic plants. It is a landscape that invites walks and excursions along the riverbanks, in a natural setting that is still well preserved despite the proximity to more industrialised centres of the province.
Food, wine and local produce
Tezze sul Brenta is part of a territory historically tied to tobacco cultivation, introduced in the second half of the seventeenth century and now recalled through the Alta Via del Tabacco route that crosses the Bassano area. No less important is the tradition of asparagus, grown in the surrounding plain and celebrated in spring in the typical dish uvi e sparasi, eggs and asparagus, a simple recipe that tells the story of local peasant cooking.
Local life and economy
The economy of Tezze sul Brenta is still linked today to agriculture, particularly horticulture, alongside a fabric of small and medium-sized enterprises typical of the Vicenza plain. The life of the municipality follows the rhythms of the agricultural seasons, with collective moments tied to typical products that mark the year, keeping alive a bond with the land that is rare to find in more urbanised areas of the province.
How to get there and location
The municipality is located in the Vicenza plain, along the course of the Brenta river, not far from Bassano del Grappa, one of the most visited art towns in the area. Its position along the river makes it a natural waypoint for those travelling the Brenta cycling routes between the Prealps and the Venetian plain.
