The story of Farra di Soligo
History and origins
The history of Farra di Soligo is linked to the events of the fief of Credazzo, ruled by the noble da Camino family, whose members, including Gaia da Camino, are also mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the sixteenth canto of Purgatorio. The fortified complex of the Credazzo Towers, three defensive towers connected by a curtain wall, dates back to between the 9th and 10th centuries and testifies to the strategic importance of the territory in medieval times, controlled by the lords of Treviso and later contested between various families.
What to see
The Credazzo Towers remain the most significant monument in the municipality, a rare example of well-preserved early medieval fortification set within the hilly landscape. On a nearby hill stands the Oratory of San Vigilio, an 11th-century building extended with a bell tower in the 14th century and enriched with an apse and sacristy in the mid-16th century, which houses fine 15th-century frescoes. The small church, isolated among the vine rows, is one of the most photographed images of the Prosecco Hills, not by chance included among the landmarks of the UNESCO site.
Nature and surroundings
Farra di Soligo lies in the heart of the UNESCO landscape of the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, a mosaic of heroic vineyards, woods, terraces and small waterfalls that makes the territory one of the most striking in the hilly Veneto. Numerous circular hiking trails allow visitors to cross the hills on foot, among the vine rows and rural hamlets, with panoramic points opening onto the Treviso plain below.
Food, wine and local produce
Wine is the true protagonist of the economy and identity of Farra di Soligo, the heart of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore production area. The local farms, many family-run, work vineyards on steep slopes that still require manual cultivation today, hence the term heroic viticulture. Wineries and farmhouses offer tastings that allow visitors to discover this work up close, together with the typical products of hillside Treviso cuisine.
Local life and economy
Membership of the Cittaslow network well reflects the spirit of Farra di Soligo, a town that has chosen to promote quality of life, local products and the slow pace linked to work in the vineyards. The local economy revolves largely around viticulture and food and wine tourism, growing steadily since the UNESCO recognition of 2019, without the town losing its rural character.
How to get there and location
Farra di Soligo lies along the Prosecco Road, between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, in a central position relative to other well-known towns in the hilly area such as Pieve di Soligo and Follina. It is easily reached by car from the Treviso plain and is an ideal stop for those travelling the wine-tourism route through the hills.
